I am no longer willing to accept the fact that my brothers in this country are in jail. They are in jail at a outrageously high number that is statistically off balance. Another whole set are being killed off in the ranks of military. But this is the story of men of color, being locked up in jail.

There is a trap set for their destruction and it has everything to do with poverty and an obvious intention to use and destroy men and now even women of color. The coffers of this system are lined with the paychecks of minimum wage earning women who are their mothers, sisters and partners. This is the system of archaic design. At an upclose level it is painful and maddening to watch and even more heartbreaking to experience. It feels hopeless and powerless when the small savings of a family can get wiped out, by simply exercising the right to see or speak to a person incarcerated. I’m talking about before the person is even charged with a crime! To simply be arrested begins a process of a financial trap for the family.  Like a set of sharp teeth, a series of never ending, ever increasing fees, fines and costs upon the loved ones begins. One of the most ridiculous costs; a 10 minute phone call at $15.00 and the complete theivary and storing of personal information due to the fact you must set up an account with a credit card. The main nationwide company who has a hold in this industry is Securis. ( Above is a photo of the “oh so happy” woman and child with phone in their ear). Securis has neatly filled their own bank accounts with this nifty plan to profit, while partnering with jails, detention centers and prisons nationwide so that there is no longer a human element in the middle of the transaction. There is no way around it; it is corruption at its finest. It is capitalizing off of another’s misfortune.

So I -as the minimum wage earner mother, wife,sister, lover, friend-will be over here mopping floors for two hours to pay for one 10 minute phone call where I will be required to listen and comprehend (in English only btw)… to 5 minutes of a computerized plastic whore warn me and  outline the bullshit scheme I must now be a part of in order for my brother, my son, my husband, my friend, my lover…. to simply be able to exercise his right to contact, even before he is ever charged! It is unnecessary and useless…it is the ugly, dirty downfall of a country supposedly founded on the principals of freedom…but remember that was the first lie.
